How breathing can influence back pain

When you inhale do your shoulder rise up toward your ears, does your neck tighten and does your stomach pull in?

If you answered yes, you’ve got a little bit of work to do. Here’s why:

When we inhale a muscle called the diaphragm contracts and lowers allowing air come into our lungs. This action influences our ability to stabilize abdominal pressure and activate key abdominal musculature for spinal stability. In people with chronic low back and sacroiliac or SI problems, the diaphragm remains high and lacks movement leaving the lumber spine or low back without proper support.

Dysfunction of the diaphragm is an important factor of, and recognized as a major contributor to low back and SI pain.

If any of this information resonates with you, I encourage you to seek someone with the proper skills to assess, treat and coach you through proper breathing mechanics. A good breath in goes a long way.

The choice is yours.
